The origins of Feng Shui
The origins of feng shui date
back to 4000 BC, to the old Chinese cultures of Yangshao and Hongshan.
By that time, the magnetic compass was not invented yet. Therefore feng
shui at that time was closely linked with astronomy. Contellations of
stars were used to determine the axis of settlements and buildings and
to identify useful and harmful sites. Several early stage astronomical
instruments were developed and used for feng shui purposes. Finally the
invention of the magnetic compass helped to bring feng shui to the next
level.
Feng shui can also be described as 'the
art of finding the right place'. It was first used mainly to detemine
the right location for tombs. But over time, it was also used in
architecture. First to find places for monuments and then even to make
sure, that cities were built in the right areas. And you can still find
many aspects of feng shui in the modern Chinese architecture today. The
feng shui wisdom was transfered over numerous generations.
